BlockStep

Each year on its birthday my guild has a party complete with cake and a present for each member.  My present was the pattern BlockStep by Robin Pickens for Color and Quilt.  I used ombre fabric from V and Co.  This fabric is to die for.  It is gorgeous and believe me I have saved every single scrap of it.  I will be using this fabric in every project to come for the next several months.

I bought the fabric as a jelly roll so the cutting was pretty easy.  After that it was just deciding how to put the blocks together.  I tried to stay true to the pattern and as far as where to put lights and darks.
I used my walking foot to sew straight lines at different increments along the quilt.  This echoed the pattern of the blocks and gave it a more modern feel.
The backing was fabric I had been saving for who knows what. It was that fabric that just never got used because it was too unusual.  Well it worked perfect for this project.  The gold tones worked perfectly with the gold dots in the fabric.  Happy Birthday to the Valley Modern Quilt Guild.

Table Cloth Skirt

Some of you may remember by table cloth skirt fiasco. Well I tried it again. This time with better fabric. I found this fabric at the Goodwill. It was something like $4.00. Sometime later when I was showing the fabric to someone I saw that it was Amy Butler fabric. I love Amy Butler and to get a remnant of her fabric for $4.00. That is what my boys would call "awesome." So here is my second attempt at the table cloth skirt. I measured this one better, I sewed slower, and I checked the fit more. The result: a beautiful skirt. A skit to wear on a cruise, if I was ever going on one. The tutorial can be found at V. and Co.
So after some research and being told that this fabric was hard to come by I found it on the Amy Butler wesbite. In case anyone is interested here it is August Fields.

Skirt

I hate patterns. I shy away from sewing clothes. I can't sew in a straight line. So I always make quilts. It doesn't matter if the lines on a quilt are not straight. No one can ever tell. But sewing clothes. That is like baking, it has to be precise. Then I found this amazing blog called V and Co. She has amazing stuff and all kinds of tutorials. She made a skirt out of a table cloth. I thought that was so neat. And she found the table cloth on sale no less. I started to keep my eye open for something I could make a skirt out of. I found this curtain at the Goodwill and decided to try the skirt.
Everything went really smoothly. I even did a zipper. My first zipper! The only problem is that a curtain is not the best material to wear next to the skin. It is pretty rough. Even with a slip underneath I can't wear it. I found some other material at the Goodwill this past week that I think will make a better skirt. I am really proud of myself for attempting this. It gives me hope that I can make other simple items. Now what to do with this curtain skirt?
